Out of My Mind - Melody's frustrations

By now, you've gotten to know Melody a little better. What kinds of things seem to frustrate her the most? Put yourself in her shoes. What kinds of things do you think would bother you the most? How would you deal with those frustrations? Be specific!

Remember to fully support your answers with evidence from the book. Re-read your comment before you post to make sure your thinking is clear.

  1. I think that the kinds of things that frustrate her the most is when she is trying to tell something important to someone but the person she is talking to can't understand her. An example is when Melody goes to see Dr. Hugely and he asked her a lot of questions in which Melody knows the answer to but since Dr. Hugely can't understand her her thinks she means something else and marks the answer wrong. An example of that is when he asked her to says something when the green card shows up and when the green card does show up she can't do the G sound and the Dr. Hugely thinks she got it wrong. The things that I think would bother me the most is probably the same thing as Melody, when I try to say something and nobody understands me. I would deal with these frustrations by doing the calm breathing like we did in open circle. To be more specific I would breath in and breath out slowly until I start to feel calm and start to feel my anger fade away.

    1. In my paragraph, I didn't mention doing breathing exercises but I agree with you that to deal with these frustrations, you could do breathing exercises to calm down. That is something that I could do!
      Nice work!

    2. I definitely agree with you that communication is her greatest issue. Like Carly, I didn't include doing breathing exercises in my paragraph, but that is a great idea to include! Also, nice job on how much detail you went into about the appointment with Dr. Hugely.

  2. Melody seems to get frustrated when she attempts to communicate with somebody through words but has trouble getting her point across. When she points to the color blue during the song that Mozart composed (spoiler alert!) Mrs. V doesn't understand what she is trying to express. I know from earlier in the book that she points to the colors that the son reminds her of, but Mrs. V doesn't know that.
If I was in her terrible, awful situation that she unfortunately stuck in, the things that would probably annoy and frustrate me the most would be similar to what frustrates Melody, communication. Along with this I would be annoyed that I wouldn't be fully able to move the way I want to move. If you think about it, not being able to grab something that's literally right in front of your face would be SOOOO FRUSTRATING!!!t This is the exact situation Melody was in when the squishy, rubber monkey toy, her favorite one, was two inches from her hand, but she couldn't control her body enough to get it that easily. Its like if there was free ice cream in your living room, but you're in your kitchen, so there's no way that your ever going to get over there or get ice cream on your own.
I would deal with those frustrations by practicing over and over and over, trying to move mouth and the rest of my body the way that it my mind is telling it to go. Just like Melody practiced with Mrs. V, I would practice every chance I get. What good does it do if you give up on trying to do what you really want to do: walk and talk? That's right! No good at all!
All in all, I think Melody should continue to practice what she very much deserves! I hope that Melody will overcome her disabilities and prove to everyone that she isn't dumb like most people think she is!

    1. Nice Job Ethan! I love your comment because it was very clear and unique! I totally agree with you that I would be really frustrated too! I love how you put a lesson at the end; to never give up, and I really can tell that you took your time writing this so nice job.

  3. Obviously, Melody can not do some of the things that we can. I am positive that many of these things bother her. Since she can not communicate, she is not treated even as a human. For example, when she was in Dr. Hugely's office, who by the way does not know anything about helping or curing Melody, he said completely in front of her that she was retarded and that he suggested that her parents give her to a residential facility without even thinking that she was listening. Luckily, she has a very understanding Mom with a " Mom Sense" that can tell she is intelligent and not to give up on her. I could not imagine how she felt. By the way I was practically in tears by this part. Also, she can't communicate with anybody, but especially her horrible teachers and class mates that are considered "The Normal Ones" . Honestly, I think that these adults who are trained to be helping her ( mostly by running tests, really?) are not doing a very good job! When she put all of those words, that she said were really just trying to make themselves sound better, in parenthesis it really made me think about what if there really was Melody or someone like her in real life if that was like her? What would they think of all those words people throw at them? I know that there are some people in the world who do underestimate kids with disabilities, but from now until the end of my life I am always going to think of Melody when I see someone like her around me.

I think if I was in Melody's shoes, I would pretty much act just like her except with more of her "tornado explosions" because I would not be able to control myself as well as she does. I don't know about all of the doctors in the world, but I totally give Melody tons and tons of credit for being who she is. The top couple of things that would completely throw me out the window and frustrate me, would be the disrespect and the judgement that Melody gets. I don't know about you, but I can't live with disloyalty. None of her "normal" classmates or should I say they go to the same school, because Melody is not even allowed anywhere without an aid ~ not that she can go anywhere by herself. My point is that they could at least say hi when they are playing four-square or go out of their way to do something nice for Melody and her classmates~ the ones that actually get to be with her.

I have no clue to what I would do if I was Melody. Obviously, I would need some luck like she had because what can a poor little girl who can't communicate do to help herself? Without Mrs. V, Melody would have no inspiration to keep going with her life. I have a prediction that Mrs. V is going to help her be able to walk and sort of talk/communicate to her parents and it is going to be a big surprise. Melody was right, her parents do owe Mrs. V way to much. I would love to meet Mrs. V because she sounds really helpful and nice.

    1. That was really good, i could see where you were coming from. I completely agree with all that you are saying! I really like how you thought of some questions based from the book and I would also like to know some of those questions too! Great job!!

  4. I think that the kinds of things that would frustrate Melody the most is that when she tries to tell something important to someone, they could not understand what she was trying to say. For example, when Dr. Hugely held up the green card, Melody couldn't make the G sound so she kicked and made a noise. Dr. Hugely was disappointed by that. Melody didn't get the other answers right that Dr. Hugely asked her, so at the end of the questions, he told Melody's mom that she is severely brain-damaged and profoundly retarded. I think this doctor doesn't even know what he is talking about and he obviously doesn't know Melody knows what he is saying about her! He thinks Melody isn't smart, but that isn't true because he just gave up on Melody.

If I was in Melody's shoes, I would act just like she does, I would be annoyed because I wouldn't be able to communicate with others like most people can. The only difference is I would not be able to hold all of my anger in as long as Melody does. I would also be annoyed by the disrespect that people give Melody, especially from her doctors. If I were Melody, I would never give up on the only chances I would have on improving my life.

I don't know what I would do with myself if I were Melody. This would be a big challenge for me just like it is for Melody. I know Melody can change her life and prove everyone wrong if she keeps working on the challenges that she has with her disabilities.

  6. What frustrates Melody the most is that she can't communicate with others. This leads them to believe she is a complete dummy. If they think that they are the complete dummy because she is probally smarter than them.An example of this is when Melody falls out of her chair watching the "Wizard of Oz." Melody's mom checked everythinng that could be hurt. In Melodys head she is thinking just put me in the wheelchair I'm fine but the movies not paused.
This would probally frustrate me the most as well. I say this because if everyone thought I was dumb but I just couldn't share my intellegence would be AWFUL. For example, not being able to inform something dangerous because they think your having tantrum would be agrivating. This hapened to Melody in the book.
A close runner up would be being in room H-5. I would despise this because they teach you nothing. In your head your smarter than the teacher but if you can't share it they think your as dumb as a rock and don't know the alphebet. They also play lullabys sung by kids who can't sing. They don't play the songs once they play them every single blessed day. As Melodys mom said an unusual punishment.
