Out of My Mind - discussion question numero uno

We have been reading Out of My Mind bit by bit for a while now. Thinking back to our discussion in class today, how does the inclusion program change Melody's school experience? Describe one positive and one negative result from the program. Do you think her school should keep the program in place? Why or why not? Be specific!

(BONUS: Why is Out of My Mind underlined or italicized and not in quotes?)

  2. The inclusion program changed Melody's school experience positively. I think this because she met a new friend and got others to actually know who she is, instead of just her looking at them at recess. Although in music class the whole H5 room is made fun of, the music teacher helps out all the kids in H5 by saying not to tease them. Then everyone else liked the H5 group. Also, for the bonus, (don't know how to underline) Out of My Mind is underlined or italicized because it's the title of the book, not the title of a chapter or a sentence in the book.

  3. This inclusion program changes Melody's experience because it gives her a chance to meet new people and to make new friends. One positive about this new program is that it exposes her to the stuff she has never seen before in room H5. One negative result from this program is that people might make fun of her and not think of her as a classmate. I think they should keep this program because it gives melody and her classmates a opportunity to see what the other 5th graders do for a change.

  4. It is underlined and not in quotes because it is a full book and not a chapter,or portion of the book. If it was, however a chapter, or part of the book it would be put in quotes.

  5. I think that if the program was perminent (or not really considered a program), it wouldn't make the kids with special needs feel different. It is a good thing overall because special needs kids are being included in what a normal class would learn/do.

  6. The inclusion program gives Melody a chance at being with the "normal" kids. It gives her an experience of not being separated at room H5. One positive result from the program is being included, as I mentioned before. It gives her an experience of what "normal" kids do, instead of building a stupid snowman. It gives her a chance to make a friend or two (Rose). A negative result is that those girls (Clare? I forget the names) that were being disrespectful to the H5 kids. Also, the teacher used the word "guests" instead of "peers" that may make them feel unwelcome.

Her school should definitely keep the program, but just make it include-ier (haha). They should make the kids feel more welcome. Instead of making them feel like its a one-time thing. The program would surely benefit the kids, "normal" and "disabled." Giving them the experience of being with someone new.

Bonus: Out of My Minds is underlined or italicized because quotes are for the title of chapters and dialogue, whereas underlining and italicizing is for book titles.

  7. A positive to the inclusion program is that all the kids that are normally in the class away from the others have a chance to make friends. For example, Melody made a friend named rose who I assume will always be nice to her. A negative would be that a few kids are not as welcoming to the kids and actually make fun of them and bully them. The program should stay, if they got rid of it then the kids might not make too many friends if they are stuck in the room with each other never spending time with other kids.

  8. Also the title is underlined/italicised because it is the name of a book.

The inclusion program changes Melody's school experience because she never got to go music in 4th grade. One positive is that Melody loves music and she gets to go to music. One negative is that when the music teacher asked if anyone wanted Melody to be their partner no one raised their hand immediately. Out of My Mind is either italicized or underlined and not in quotes because it is a book title.

The schools inclusion program is good for melody's experience because it lets her find out new things that she never new about that were in her school. The one negative thing about the inclusion program is that some kids are bullies to the kids that are disabled. I do not think that the school should keep the inclusion in place because they make it sound like kids like melody are a different kind of human being. Almost like being someone that is scary and does different activities then the other kids. So they should make the inclusion program everyday like normal class. BONUS: Out of my mind is underlined because we are answering a short answer question instead of writing a summary or open response.

  11. One positive result of the program was that melody experienced, and dealt with a class out of room h5. During the music class, melody and her classmates were made fun of by two students. Some may think this is negative, but I think it s good because she realized that something could go wrong and the new program will not be perfectly normal. something negative is that this is only a temporary change and not going to be on a daily basis.I think they should keep this program because the room h5 kids will encounter and interact with other kids eventually and they should get practice with it.

  12. I think that the "Inclusion Program" was a turn for the better for Melody because not only did she meet Rose(I think that was her name..)she finally got to go to music class. I also think that it was maybe not the best experience for the younger kids in H5 because some had spasms or started crying. Melody seemed to handle it well and those mean girls only really made fun of the other children. I was really happy when the music teacher made the mean girls stand all class. I think the school should definitely keep the program up but organize it in a better way, so that the H5 kids are not "guests" but just fellow students.

  13. As melody takes part of the inclusion program, it changes the way she looks at school. At the beginning of the program she has had a small issue with two girls who bullied the kids who they think stand below them or in other words "not as cool as them". Her day become better after she made new friend named rose. She became happier as she finally found someone to hang out with.
I do think the school should keep this program in place because it gives the children an opportunity to meet new people and also gives them the chance to be treated like normal kids.
(Bonus: Out of My Mind is underlined or italicized and not in quotes because it is a title of a book. If it were in quotes that means it would be a chapter or small section of the book.)

  14. The inclusion program changed Melody's school experience because she got to be with other 5th grades her own age and not with 5 year olds where she would make a snowman. One positive effect it had was that when the teacher said "who would like to be Melody's partner" no one raised their hand but then Rose said "I'll be Melody's partner". One negative effect it had was that there were some mean girls who were making fun of Melody. The book is underlined and not in quotation marks because it is the name of a book and not the title of a chapter.

  15. The inclusion program changes melodys experience because it gives her the time to be with people who aren't like her and to make potential friends with those people. One positive is that she is seeing things that she might not be used to like a class such as music or her same classmates in room h5 that shes with everyday. One negative is that the teachers are referring to the kids from h5 as guests. The teachers should say that there students to make the kids feel like their the same as everyone else, which they really are. I think the program should go on but I think that they should have a schedule set up so they can feel like the other kids and not to just feel like visitors.
Bonus: Out of My Mind is in italics or underlined because it is the name of a book, only the chapters of a book are in quotation marks

  16. The "Inclusion Program" changed Melody's school experience in a positive way, in my opinion. One positive thing that happened to Melody in her inclusion class experience was meeting Rose. She also had the chance of being in a more interactive class with more kinds her age.
One negative affect of the inclusion program is that the kids in room H5 were at first considered "guests" and not students. But overall I personally think that the inclusion class had a positive affect on not only Melody, but all of the kids in the H5 classroom.
I think that the school should keep the inclusion program but organize it a little bit better so that there are more inclusion classes for the kids in room H5 so they could make more friends or acquaintances.
Out of My Mind is underlined and not in quotes because it is the name of a book and not the title of something like a song

  17. the inclusion of the less advanced class was music. one bad part about it was that people were being mean. for example when the teacher called out who would like to sit next to them and no one was the first to raise their hands. Also the other people was making fun of the other kids. Another reason its a bad idea is because is when they came in they we not welcome. The music teacher called them guess as if they we only there for once. And they were the sunlight of the show . Meaning everyone was staring and that was the attention of the show . A few reasons that its a great idea for the less advanced class to be with the advanced class is because they made friends. People they can be with to have someone to make them feel good about their self's. They would have other people to be around then the other same kids they are always with. Also to feel like hey belong..............

  18. I think the inclusion program is a good thing this is because melody and kids in room H5 get to experience something new rather than zoom zoom. also the room H5 kids get to make new friends including melody. she has rose as a partner. in the classroom friends are made and music is for learning in a fun and new way. the only reason why the new classroom might be a bad thing is its a new surrounding and the two mean girls made fun of them. but they had to sit in the back of the class. the reason the book is underlined is because its a book name not the name of a chapter.

  19. They should cancel the program in my opinion. One reason to cancel the program would be because they were treated only like guests, not like they were a part of the class like what the point of the program is. If they keep the program the way it is it's like a teaser to the special kids. They get a taste of what it would be like in a normal class but they don't get to spend much time there. Also, its not the best experience when someone is bullying you about being different. If they modified the program so these problems were taken care of it would be a better experience for everyone.
There are some good parts of the program though

    1. (posted accidentally before finishing typing) continued: the good parts of the the program consist of for one, getting to see what these children were like and make a friend or two. Also they got to experience how these children can be mean and nice to the people around them including them. It was a life experience for all of them, even for the regular kids.

  20. Out of my mind(couldn't figure out how to put in italics)is in italics because it is a title of a book not a chapter. A chapter would be put parenthesis.

  21. The inclusion class changes Melody's school experience because it is her first time being around considered "normal" kids, also it is allowing her to be tought with new suroundings. A positive result from the program was when nobody in the class rased their hands quickly until a girl named Rose raised her hand. A negative effect in the program was when the teacher singled out the Special Ed kids and called them guests, which felt like they were never going to come back. Yes, I do think the school should keep the program going, because its a good experience for both groups of kids. Bonus: Out of my Mind is italized and underlined instead of in quotes because its the name of a book not a chapter.
