Chapter 17 - Any new thoughts on the meaning of "release"?

Now that you have read this far, now what do you think “release” means? Include evidence from the text to support your answer. Do you think a society should be able to “release” people? If so, when is it appropriate?

  1. Release may be to move the Elders into the wilderness or into another community and the newborn into another community. OR if my gut is right they may just put them into a room and release some sort of gas that painlessly kills them. It feels like they throw the celebration to leave the rest of the process covered up. Hmm should a society be able to release people. This one is kind of a toughie because it depends on who the person is. If it's a newborn than NO, because they've barely been able to experience their life. For an Elder than maybe, cuz if they are in complete misery than they should be released. But if they are fine than they shouldn't. If it's a person who assaulted someone than yes because as that old saying says "A zebra or some other thing never changes it's stripes".

    1. Well, I agree with Andrew. For the Old, it may be a painless, secretive death. Or, I was talking about this with Hayden, maybe some of the Old get a choice to become Elders or get sent into a community where the rules aren't so strict. Maybe they get sent to the wilderness or a small village.

  2. I think it is death because the elders would have been less secretive about it if it was not death so they wouldn't scare people... :(

  4. It says that they go Elsewhere, and a group of Sevens came to their community from Elsewhere. So i feel like if it is a child or baby, they go to Elsewhere, a place proven to have human life, but if it is an Old they may just die a painless death (or get chosen as an Elder) since it is celebrated cheerfully.

  5. I think released means being free sort of. i think that the elders are either painfully killed, as Hayden said, they are shot with some sort of injection that kills them. And the babies are kinda pushed through the doors for someone in Elsewhere to take care of. When the sevens visited from Elsewhere, Lily said that they behaved differently. Maybe, if Elsewhere is like the real world, than the sevens were like us.........
