Out of My Mind - noteworthy passages in Chapter 26

Post a comment here if you flagged a noteworthy passage in this chapter. For inspiration, think about our discussion of Melody being singled out on stage during round one of the tournament. Everyone had a LOT to say!

Or, try using the "Response to Literature Guidelines" sheet for ideas. What stuck out about this passage? Why was it meaningful?

As always, proofread before you post! Make your thinking clear so others know what you mean.

  1. When Melody and her team go out to dinner it soon came to an end when Clair YOU KNOW!!!! I can not even think about it, it gives me the jibbery jabberys just thinking about it!!!! After the incident Melody caught herself thinking..," Clair gets sick in the middle of a crowded restaurant, yet I'm the one everyone looks at sideways." I couldn't help but think about if i were a person looking at this situation. Even though i know better, if I didn't what would I be thinking? Or looking at more? I decided that i can't decide, for me it is hard to think of someone as different if we all are different. I know that that is kinda hard to process, but just think about it. We are all different in some sort of way, I am different from my best friend, they are different from me. It just so happens that Melody is also different ( mind blowing!). She just happens to be a little bit different and that is what made her world so unique. This may not be completely true but if i were Melody I would be proud that i was her. And as it goes for Clair she just had a little ( ok BIG ) accident. So, this got me think which person would I look at weird and i decided nether because we are all different and they just happen to either be a little more different and unique, or sick from lying or sickness.
This brings me one to my next thought. Was Clair really sick from being sick or was she sick from telling a HUGE, GINORMOUS , GIGANTIC, lie? My thoughts are yes she was sick from telling that lie. Everyone may not be good, but there is a good in everyone. That was told to me by my grandmother and i thought that that fully explains Clair's attitude. Clair was never completely nice to Melody but from the accident that was experienced we can tell that she was feeling a bit guilty!
Whats your opinion? I would love to hear it!!!

    1. I totally agree Maggie!!! Great job!!! I was thinking as I was reading your comment and ended up going back into the book (on page 120) when Mrs. V said "You! Girl with the braces on her teeth! Why do you think your parents spent good money getting you braces? Your teeth were imperfect so your parents got you braces. One day you'll thank them when you get a date to the prom. Some people get braces on their teeth. Some get braces on their legs. For others, braces don't work, so they need wheelchairs walkers and such. You're a lucky girl that you only had messed up teeth. Remember that." It made me think of that when you said every one is different and you were completely right!

I also agreed with you when you said that Claire may have gotten sick from telling that lie on television too. That does TOTALLY explain Claire's attitude!! Great Job Maggie I really liked your comment!!!!!

    2. Maggie, nice response!! but i totally agree with you that they are both different. I really do think that people can look at Melody differently because of how she looks. That is just how it is for her. and if people look at her then that is just plain rude. But when Claire you know did her thing it happens and people can't look at her differently either because chances are that it probably happened to them to. So really they are both different in their ways. Also I agree that she got sick from that lie on TV. That totally explains every thing!! I know if I said that on TV I would feel SOO guilty I don't know how I would get it off the chest. Nice job Maggie I really liked your comment!!

    3. Maggie I totally agree! I exceptionally like how you made it clear they were both different. People look at Melody as very different when they are equally different. I also agree that Claire got sick because she had told such a huge lie. If anyone had told a lie that big they would get sick. Nice job!

    4. Maggie, I agree with everything you said. I flagged this passage as well, and at the time, I knew Claire was bad, but not this bad, I mean this was a total lie. She knew she could get away with it because she knew Melody was too nice to respond, and she just didn't have enough time.

  2. This is my second time doing this so hopefully it doesn't randomly disappear! I flagged the passage on page 238 where Melody feels everyone looks at her when she is being fed but no one makes a big deal when Claire throws up! Melody did nothing wrong and she gets the negative attention. I mean Claire threw up ALL over Mr. Dimming's shoes and no one said a word. Claire just gets everything she wants. I mean think back to where she said she sat with Melody everyday at lunch. I doubt she even knows where Melody even sits. Claire has everything go her way. She has feeling of being superior over Melody, she's popular, everyone thinks she is just SO nice to sit with someone like Melody and she gets pity when Melody gets sideway glances. It sickens me someone like Claire would stoop so low. The biggest reason I flagged this was I saw more into everyone else's personalities.

  3. The passage I flagged was on page 234. This passage really stuck out to me because I felt so bad that Melody was just being stared at the whole time. That is possibly one of the most embarrassing things to happen to you in public. Thinking back to GraceAnne's passage, which I flagged as well, when Claire threw up, no one stared at her, they just left. Most likely, Melody didn't want to eat her Mac&Cheese because she felt too embarrassed to have her mother feed it into her mouth. Everyone stared at her, even her friends. She even mentioned that she was nervous of what everyone would think of how she ate. She had always eaten in a private area for the kids with disabilities, where none of her friends Could see her. I felt really bad how Claire and Molly were probably exchanging bad comments about Melody behind her back. After the first few spoonfuls of pasta, the room got quiet. Even Connor stopped talking. Melody was so hungry, but the embarrassment was just too much for her. The main reason why I flagged this passage was because I just felt so bad for Melody, and I realized just how embarrassed she was.
