Out of My Mind - noteworthy passages in Chapter 28

Post a comment here if you flagged a noteworthy passage in this chapter. For inspiration, think about our discussion of Melody being singled out on stage during round one of the tournament. Everyone had a LOT to say!

Or, try using the "Response to Literature Guidelines" sheet for ideas. What stuck out about this passage? Why was it meaningful?

As always, proofread before you post! Make your thinking clear so others know what you mean.

  1. Wow. I am so mad right now I can't even explain it. I have so many questions about this chapter it's crazy. Why in the world did they leave Melody? Was it because they didn't want her getting any attention and they were mad at her so they left? Were they jealous? Were there feelings hurt? If any one's feelings should be hurt it's Melody's. Melody has been waiting for this all her life and now some kids and a crazy teacher blew it for her. I can't imagine what feelings are striking Melody. What about her mom, Mrs. V, and her dad? Mrs. V has worked incredibly hard with Melody on facts, dates, science, math, and anything you could possibly imagine all for this? Her mom and dad have wanted Melody to show the world what goes on inside this genius girl's head, and now they can't do that. Some kids who didn't know what they were thinking just ruined everything for Melody. Of all the extremely hard challenges Melody faces, this one is one of the hardest. I am so terribly, heart-brokenly mad right now that you probably will and can see steam coming out of my ears and my face burning up the color of lava. Even though I read the book before, I forget what sad, horrible news this was. I forgot that this was the part of the story where you were heart broken for the day. I thought that there was going to be one lucky flight that Melody could go on and she was going to surprise everyone. I wish I could change that part in the book. I am trying not to feel pity for the girl who can't control herself, can't walk, and can't talk. I am trying so hard to stay strong and hope that something good will come out of it.
Do you think Rodney, Molly, Rose, Elena, Conner, and Mr. Dimming feel bad? What do you think your reactions will be? It would be awesome to hear what you think!!!!!!

    1. I totally agree with you Carly! This was so rude and mean of her team to not include her for breakfast and they didn't even call Melody to tell her that they were going on the 9:00 plane ride! I am SO MAD!!! I also thought there was going to be like a 10:00 plane ride to Washington D.C. or they were just going to drive there. I didn't realize it would take about 10 hours to drive there. I think they left Melody there on purpose and they don't even feel bad for her. I think Claire will be happy that Melody isn't going so she could take her place and compete with Molly. Maybe Mr. D set this plan up because he put Molly on the Wiz Kids team, knowing that Claire will take Melody's spot when she doesn't show up. This is a great response Carly!! I love how you added some of your own knowledge in here and you used lot's of voice. These are also some great questions you are asking throughout your response!! Great job!!

  2. I agree with you 110%. I was so mad and surprised when they arrived at the airport and their flight was cancelled. I bet that if they could have gone on an earlier flight to Washington, even if their flight wasn't cancelled, they still would have taken the flight they had already booked, but with the added pressure of being late for the Whiz Kids tournament, they just decided to leave Melody. I believe their decision was so selfish, and I don't think they would have done the same if they were leaving behind Connor, Rose, Molly, or any other participants in the challenge. Okay, they maybe, just maybe, with a slight chance left behind an alternate. Speaking of alternates, now that Melody can't make it to the tournament Claire can play with Molly. I definitely think that had something to do with leaving Melody behind. This makes me think that Claire is a very sneaky and obviously hurtful person. Of the people on the plane, I think that everyone, especially Rose and Mr. Dimming, and besides Molly and Claire fell a little bit bad for leaving Melody behind, but then again, they had a part in leaving her behind, so they can't regret their decision. YET...(dun dun duuuuuuuuuu)

    1. I completely agree with Ethan. Like he said, I also think that they would have contacted one of the other teammates if they were running behind, except Melody. It seems like they left Melody behind just so Claire wouldn’t have to be an alternate and she could play. In addition to what Ethan said, I think that all the teammates, including the parents and Mr. Dimming, were very selfish, irresponsible and mean by the fact that not one of them, including Rose, tried to contact Melody or her family about the flight being cancelled.

  3. The noteworthy passage that I found was near the bottom of page 259. When I read it, all that was going through my mind was of how Melody's mom is a very optimistic person. She is always hoping for the best even when she knows what she wants to happen will not happen. In the book, Melody's mom wants to think that the team didn't have time to contact her but she really knows that they purposely forgot to contact her and inform her to arrive for the earlier flight. I think this is her way of calming herself and this might be how she got through Melody having cerebral palsy and not being like every other kid. I think she should stop doing this because I think she is getting her hopes up just to have them be crushed by the wave of reality. I would love to hear what you think of my thoughts.

  4. I don't even have words to describe this chapter. I am furious at Melody's teammates!!! I can't believe they wouldn't Take her to breakfast!!! There must have been a reason... Other than the picture in the newspaper, I have nothing, and that wasn't a big deal. I wonder if this is why nobody really talked to her at school! Maybe, but wouldn't you call even if you left two hours before? Like everyone in Melody's family, plus Mrs. V, I am confused. What if they set this whole thing up just to give Melody a chance because they thought she did not belong (before they got to D.C.). Maybe, the announcer who was so into Melody was in on it too!!!! He could have rigged the answer board for Melody and maybe it even tricked Melody herself!!! I don't know if that is possible because they are messing with the smartest girl in the world here!!! If there is a trick being played here, her and her mom will figure this one out!! They are going to loose this competition if they don't get Melody on that team. I hope they know that by now! If you think closely back to this chapter, what could have gone wrong before they got to the airport? Everyone was excited, Melody got brand new clothes and a shiny red suitcase, even Penny was pumped!!! If this was on purpose someone is going to get Melody's mom right in the face!!! No wonder Melody's heart sunk!!! It's just one of those times when everything is going to good to end up that way:( . Think of how Melody studied for this!!! I can't believe if they didn't want her on the team, which would be kind of a mistake, than they just would say so!! Actually, I don't want that to happen. Still their actions were completely immature and unkind!! I mean seriously there is a teacher involved here!!!!! I am soooooo mad at these people who have betrayed Melody's heart!! I thought that maybe Clair was getting nicer and that Conner really like Melody!!! He was nice to her at the studio, but maybe only because Melody's mom was standing right there. And Mr. D, oh Mr. D. I thought he was really getting along with Melody, but he is the teacher and I really want to scream right now because of his actions. I am about to lose it!!!! I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this chapter!!! Honestly I thought that the whole thing was important!!! From Happy... To really heartbreaking news.
