Out of My Mind - noteworthy passages in Chapter 27

Post a comment here if you flagged a noteworthy passage in this chapter. For inspiration, think about our discussion of Melody being singled out on stage during round one of the tournament. Everyone had a LOT to say!

Or, try using the "Response to Literature Guidelines" sheet for ideas. What stuck out about this passage? Why was it meaningful?

As always, proofread before you post! Make your thinking clear so others know what you mean.

  1. What popped out to me in this chapter is page 246 when Melody seems to be making herself feel bad because she thinks they don't want her on the team. I found this noteworthy because Melody usually doesn't care what other people think that involves her disabilities. Also, I feel like she is overreacting at least a little bit. She feels like she's stealing the spotlight from the other members of the team and that the picture of her in the paper should be of everybody instead of just her. I agree, but it isn't her fault, so she shouldn't get so down on herself in my opinion. Also, it's surprising to me that Rose is the only one who kind of understands this. Other kids are telling her that she did a great job, but "the eyes tell the truth" that they envy her or dislike her. I think it's extremely silly to envy her because of her disabilities. Melody is probably thinking this or has thought of this before. I can see why they dislike her, but it's out of her control, so just leave her alone! Melody also thinks that the claps she got in Mr. Dimming's classroom was more polite than sincere, and I agree. Of coarse some kids think that pizza is cooler and more exiting than Melody: because they don't know her or understand her very well. At the end of her talk with Catherine, I'm glad that she understood that she shouldn't feel bad for herself and to not care what her other classmates think if it is a negative thought. If you have read to chapter 28, you know that her teammates leave her behind to go to Washington. Based on my comment and chapter 28, what are your thoughts on Melody's relationships with her teammates? Also, what do you think about other kids making her feel bad?

    1. I agree with 200% i also think that, and maybe she feels that way because she just made new friends. But I really do agree with you! I thought that you were very clear about what you were thinking! I think that Melody from her perspective was feeling great at first about her teammates and making new friends, however as soon as i got through chapter 28, I thought that she must have felt heartbroken. Her relationship with her teammates plummeted hard. On the other side of this relationships we have the teams perspective and i think that they were beginning to actually have fun with Melody, until they had to make her feel like a pile of craziness. I swear if i were there i would surly give them a piece of my mind!!!! I just wish that everyone in this book except for Mrs. V, Catherine, and her family realize that Melody's is more unique than anything! All in all, I really think you did a GREAT JOB!!!

  2. One of the note worthy passages I flagged in chapter 27 was on page 242. Melody's dad said that he was proud of her and loved her. After that she said that she got teary and she wished she could hug Penny and tell her dad she loves him but not through a machine. This passage stuck out to me because even in her condition she finds a way to move her family and express her feelings to her family. I was thinking while I was reading this and I thought back to when Mrs. V asked her if she wanted to walk or talk. Now that they have accomplished talking in a way I would think she would ask to learn how to move or walk. Did you think about this as you were reading this passage? I thought abpout it because then if she could walk then she could hug Penny and after that maybe learn how to control her squeals and learn how to actually talk and not through a machine. I would love to hear you replies about what you were thinking when you read this passage.

    1. Sarah, I agree with you 200%. I had the same thoughts about Melody's family when I read that page. What I didn't think of was when you mentioned how Melody could now learn to talk since she can talk now. That never crossed my mind at all while I was reading. Overall, great post Sarah!!!!!

    2. I agree with you Sarah too!!! I think that that was a neat passage with lots of detail!!! I did not think of how she can not show expression and emotion through her computer. That is so so sad. I can't think of how I would live without showing people how happy, sad, excited, ect. I am!!! Even on my computer, I can't type as well as I can speak! My grandmother always says that you can't show emotion by typing with your thumbs. I thought that was kind of funny because whenever we text with each other, we don't think about what we do, we just say it. I guess that is a little connection to Melody, and Sarah, you really did a great because you really got your point across clearly!!! Nice Job!!!
