Out of My Mind - Chapter 11 discussion questions

Post your question in the "Comments" section below. Use my posts as a guide. Do I ask my question in just one sentence? No! Remember, you've got to make your questions dynamic enough that your classmates will have something to respond to meaningfully.

  1. Melody got to sit in a music class with normal kids for a day. She was the last one to get picked to sit with one of the normal kids. Then a girl named rose came up to her and invited her to be her friend. How would you feel during the time period when Melody wasn't sited with anybody? How would you feel when Rose came up to Melody? Explain.

    1. If I was Melody and nobody sat next to me until the very end I would have mixed emotions. Before Rose would sit next to me I would feel very worried that no one would volunteer to be the first one to sit next to "the girl in the wheel chair." It would be devastating to me if I was first introduced as so unpopular that nobody even had the guts to sit next to me in music. When Rose would come up to me I would feel so incredibly relieved that no one could even understand how I felt. In my mind I would be saying, "Thank you, god for letting this happen to me!" Also, this would be my first chance in all my life to make a friend. In saying this, my final emotion would be happiness that somebody doesn't see me as a blob in a wheel chair. All in all, if Rose didn't sit next to me, I wouldn't know what to do next.

  2. During music class two mean girls named Molly and Claire decide to pick on Melody and pretend they are retarded. How would you feel if you were Melody? And how would you punish them if you were a teacher?

    1. If I were Melody I would feel like I was a joke. I would feel like my only reason for living was for people to mock me and make fun of me. As a teacher I would give them a worse punishment than Mrs. Lovelace. I would have them stay after school for a month to learn about everyone's medical condition in room H-5. At the end I would have them write a 5 paragraph essay about the conditions to be graded.

  3. Melody now has an electric wheelchair. When Freddy saw her wheeling down the hallway, he was really excited for Melody! He said lots of things like, Whoo-hooo and, do you want to race? How do you think that this could impact their relationship? Could this help them to be more understanding of one another and maybe be friends? Explain your thinking.

    1. I think that Freddie and Melody will become good friends. I think this because they actually have something in common. As a solution to Melody being lonely at recess, Melody and Freddie might be able to have wheel chair races and actually have someone to hang around with when everyone else has gone their own way. If this happens, Freddie and Melody actually have something to look forward to while coming to school every morning. It would give them a sense that could be actually be included. It will help them understand that no matter what they are going through, they can have something in common to talk about and they can both understand that they can't walk but they can ride. In the beginning of the book, Freddie asks Melody "Melody go zoom to?". Now, Melody can make Freddie happy that she can.
