Out of My Mind - Chapter 13 discussion questions

Post your question in the "Comments" section below. Use my posts as a guide. Do I ask my question in just one sentence? No! Remember, you've got to make your questions dynamic enough that your classmates will have something to respond to meaningfully.

  1. At the end of chapter 13 Melody asks herself if Rose actually had a good time at the aquarium. Why do you think she asked this question? What are your opinions about Rose's behavior when Molly and Claire show up at the aquarium? Explain and give evidence from the text to help support your answer.

    1. Well Melody asks herself that question since Rose didn't really try and defend Melody and her family. Her exact words were, "Its not so bad." Melody of course had self doubts if Rose really wanted to be there or was just saying that. Rose shouldn't have acted the way she did. She should have defended Melody and her family saying that it was very kind of them to invite her. I mean seriously? They invited her to a nice aquarium and they're "not bad"? Don't get me wrong she sounds like a nice enough girl, but come on! Just because Claire and Molly are the intimating "popular girls" doesn't mean a thing. Claire was rude and Rose should have caught on to that and do the thing where she scowled and told her classmates to respectful as she did when the students from H5 came in for inclusion classes.

    2. I thought of this when I was reading this chapter, and I'm not sure what to think about Rose. My mind is tugging me in the direction which Rose didn't mean what she said. The hopeful side of me assumes that Rose is just acting to Molly and Claire to try to be cool and sound popular. Rose says "It's not so bad," which isn't a huge insult. Although, if she were to act cool she would dis Melody even more and say that it stinks to hang out with Melody. I don't blame Melody for asking this question after what Rose said because she didn't really defend Melody. After thinking it through I have to go with my gut. Rose is probably just trying to be cool in front of the two popular girls. I think Rose really does care for Melody and thinks about what it is like for her.

    3. I think that melody asked herself if rose actually enjoyed the aqueraium trip because Ithink she thought that she didn't have fun and that she was making fun of her when she started talking to claire. My reaction to when Claire and Molly showed up at the aquraium and when Rose started talking to them saying "Its not so bad" I got that she thought it would have been better with someone else and that I thought it was mean.

  2. Melody, Rose, Penny, Melody's mom, Melody's dad, and Mrs.V went to the aquarium and they saw Claire and Molly there. When Molly asks who Rose was at the aquarium with, Rose mumbles that she was here with Melody's family. Claire says," On purpose?" How do you think Melody felt when Claire said this to Rose? Also, what do you think Melody's mom would have said or done to the girls if Melody's dad wasn't there to stop her? Fully explain your answers using evidence from the book.

  3. Well, Melody is different and we all know that, she is probably made fun of and whispered about in clusters of girls. When Rose says, "It's not so bad" Melody hears her and that probably made her feel like she was punch in the stomach. Have you ever had a feeling when something like your best friend turns against you or you get a bad grade and you feel queasy that might have been what she felt.

I think Melody's mom would have told those girls what Mrs. V told them, that nobody is perfect and that some people have different opportunities. Like that Claire has braces on her teeth and that she is lucky that she doesn'tt have what some others have and that is that some people have braces on their legs, or they are in wheel chairs or walkers. Moms have some sort of mom sense were they just no what to say. My mom used to tell me that it is not what other people think of you it is what you think of yourself and that is my advice to Melody and frankly I don't think she really cares what people think about her, she is true to who she is!

  4. I think that when Clair asked Rose if she went to the aquarium with Melody's family "On purpose", Melody felt awkward, embarrassed and angered. Melody was most likely angered because Rose didn't really stick up for her. Rose was a little embarrassed with Melody's family. Clair was trying to send the message to her that she shouldn't be here with a "retard", which I think, and everyone should agree, is one of the meanest things in this book so far. Also, I think Melody was feeling a little angered and embarrassed when Rose didn't totally stick up for Melody. Rose was quietly murmuring her answer to Clair so that maybe she couldn't hear. This is a sign of embarrassment. Although Rose didn't lie about coming to the aquarium with Melody or saying something like"I happened to see Melody here and just walked with her." Rose did stick up for Melody a little bit, but I think that Melody has some questions on Rose's behavior.

In addition, if Melody's dad wasn't there to stop Melody's mom, Melody's mom would have said something like she did to Dr. Hugely, Melody's teacher, or other people who have harassed or treated Melody like a baby to Clair. Melody's mom would have said to Clair that "Melody will one day be successful, or accomplish many things, or even have a very happy life, and Melody won't care what people like you said to her in the past, or then. She will stay strong and she will tell you what a wonderful life she is having, and that she loves talking. She especially likes to talk nice to people, and maybe that's what you should do." I think that is Melody's mom personality, do you? Melody's mom maybe would also call Clair's mom and explain the situation to her. Melody's mom is a tough person who won't let anyone hurt her daughter.

  5. Chapter 13 talks about penny and her personality. Do you think melody and penny are alike in this way? if so, is melody annoyed/pleased by this? (in what ways?)
