Out of My Mind - new additions to Melody's family

We've met a couple of additions to Melody's family (one furry, one human). Describe how the introduction of these new characters changed the dynamics of Melody's life at home. Melody's feelings about Penny must be complicated! Analyze how Melody must have felt as she watched her sister reach the typical milestones of a baby/toddler. Do you think having Butterscotch around helped? Be specific and clear with your thinking.

Don't forget to fully re-read and edit your answer before you post!

  1. Melody has had a few additions to her family such as the new Golden Retriever puppy named Butterscotch. Also she got a new baby sister named Penny. These new characters change Melody's life at home because Her parents were going to be all over Penny and not really worry about her. As Penny grew up Melody might have felt almost left out because Penny is doing all the things she can't do and her parents are all over Penny and always recording her every move. Penny said her first word. Melody can't speak. She took her first steps. Melody can't walk. That is why I think she is a little left out. Having Butterscotch around helped because she is always there for Melody when she needs someone to be with. butterscotch also probably wouldn't really make her feel sad and fell how she did when she saw penny doing the things she can't do.

  2. These new additions to the family have really changed Melody's life. The first addition that she got was a puppy for her birthday! I think Melody got a puppy because her goldfish, Ollie, died. Melody got to name her new dog and she named her Butterscotch because butterscotch caramels are her favorite candy. Butterscotch sleeps at the foot of her be every night and she actually understands Melody and knows what she needs. For example, when Melody is watching the Wizard of Oz, she falls out of her wheel chair and doesn't want to yell and scream for her mom because she is taking a nap, so Butterscotch went to her mother's room and scratched and barked at the door so Butterscotch could get her mother to help Melody get back into her wheel chair. Another addition to Melody's family is her new baby sister, Penny. Penny learned her sister, Melody, and understood Melody couldn't do what she could do, but Penny didn't really care. I think Melody is SO jealous and annoyed by Penny because she is a perfect baby and she can do everything Melody can not do. If I was Melody, I would want to scream and yell because I would not be able to just watch Penny do the typical things people are supposed to learn when they are young, which are all the things Melody can't do! This must be so FRUSTRATING for Melody!! For example, Melody's dad is following Penny around with his camcorder, recording every adorable thing that happens to Penny. Melody says after all of the videos she watched," It stinks to watch a baby do what you wish you could do." I am frustrated just reading the book and picturing what it would be like if Penny was getting all the attention. I think Butterscotch really calms her down, relives all the stress that is inside of her, and keeps Melody company. Maybe that is why her parents got a dog for her, because they knew Melody needed something of her own that would keep her entertained while her parents take care of the baby. I can't wait to read more to find out what happens. Are Melody's parents going to realize what Melody is going through right know or are they going to keep focusing on Penny and her improvements?

  3. Melody had two new editions to the family and both of the editions brought different feelings. First, The Golden Retriever Butterscotch brought joy and happiness to Melody because the dog is like her and can't talk. Also Butterscotch to me feels kind of like a service dog for example she scratched, barked and rammed the door intill Melodies mom heard it and woke up form her nap and came to see what was wrong also Butterscotch never leaves Melodies side. Secondly, The second edition to the family kind of brought jealousy to Melody because Penny can walk and talk and do the things Melody wishes she could do and Penny can do them perfectly.
