Out of My Mind - Ollie!

In chapter 8 we finally get to meet the star of the book's cover - Melody's pet goldfish. What is significant about the story of Ollie the fish? Why do you think the author included this anecdote? Try to think beyond the obvious... How does Ollie's life mirror Melody's? Describe Melody's feelings when she is unable to tell her mother what really happened. Is this inline with what we've learned about her typical frustrations? Why or why not? Be specific and incorporate evidence into your explanation.

  1. Ollie was like Melody, as they were both trapped inside somewhere they didn't belong. Ollie, was in a bowl and should be out in the ocean, free like all animals should. Melody is a shell of what she could be like. If her body had been able to function correctly she may be going to college at age 12! She is trapped somewhere she can't escape. Yes this is inline with her typical frustrations as she wants to be free. She wants to be that stereotypical kid and she can't since her body won't allow her to. She has so much intentional and no one can see that. This frustrates her. Understandably, Melody has anger and frustration because everything she has to give is nestled in her brain, without anyone else knowing.
